Marble Polishing for Restoring its Shine and Glimmer

Marble flooring has been around for centuries together. In the ancient times, castles and mansions were made of marble and it demarcated higher social stature and elegance in the society. Today, marble serves as a material for building various areas such as fireplaces, vanities and even countertops. Also, marble flooring has been considered a well favoured choice for the floors in many houses all across the globe today. But marble flooring requires certain degree of maintenance and care so that it is protected from scratching, staining and other damages.

Restoring the Polish of the Marble:

In order to restore the polish of the marble floor, diamond floor pads are used for grinding the surface. This step is important for exposing another pristine layer of stone. Then the layer is polished with fine grade stone polishing pad. When the process comes to an end, the floor receives a finish that resembles that of a mirror.

But the process is time-consuming and requires experts to perform. It is generally done in 5 steps and they are described as follows:

1st Step: Lippage Removal and Grinding:

This dynamic process is also called flattening or lippage removal. The scratches and high edges in the marble that leads to the imperfections are called lippage. Often, newly installed marble flooring seem to have tiles with lower and upper flatness. Grinding helps in removing all kinds of roughness and gives the marble floor the desirable flatness. The professionals use diamond floor polishing pads and coarse grit for a quick grinding of the marble.

2nd Step: Honing:

This step is meant for bringing the required smoothness to the floor of marble. It is also effective in removal of scratch marks and therefore, experts use diamond polishing pads with industrial diamonds for offering a visible shine to the floor. Honing is essential for giving a uniform look to the floor. In some instances, it is seen that honing is all that is needed to bring the spectacular look to the marble floor.

3rd Step: Polishing:

As the name suggests, polishing is required for bringing about the shining effect to the floor. This again, is done with the help of industrial diamond pads with grit ranging between 400 and 1500. If the marble floor is in decent condition, then marble polishing could be enough to restore back its shine.

4th Step: Buffing:

In this step, marble is polished and buffed with a finer grit. Often crystallization is done to improve the durability of shine. The chemical reaction on the marble helps in bringing about its mirror like shine on the surface of the marble.

It is important to understand that marble floor requires the right kind of care so that your investment is protected for many years to come. If you find that your marble floor is damaged to a considerable extent, you should consult with an expert without trying to reverse the damage by fixing it yourself.
